Thwaites Says Education Ministry Should Rethink Using Pre-Trained Teachers To Replace Migrating Teachers

Ronald Thwaites, the Opposition Spokesman on Education, has described as shortsighted the Education Ministry’s announcement to deploy pre-trained teachers in schools as a means of filling vacancies due to teacher migration.

In the wake of reports that Jamaica is again grappling with a shortage of teachers, the Education Ministry on Wednesday said it is developing strategies to prevent fallout when the new academic year begins in a few weeks.

The ministry said the strategies would include the deployment of pre-trained teachers to select schools.

However, Minister Thwaites said the ministry should rethink its position.
