Additional Security Measures will be put in place for the Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre following a video that was circulating online with inmates voicing their concerns about the operations of the facility.
Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security (MNS), Rudyard Spencer, yesterday met with officials of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) to address the recent developments at the Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre (FAACC) on South Camp Road in Kingston.
In a release the Minister reassured that investigations are being conducted jointly by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) on the assault of a female inmate at the facility.
Following the meeting, a visit with the officials was conducted at the institution and the Minister announced that additional security measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences of violent incidents and safe guard the basic rights of inmates.
Minister Spencer also noted that following a health assessment by the institutions’ medical team, three inmates were diagnosed as mentally ill and were placed in singular cells.
He said, to further strengthen the security in these facilities, frequent random searches will be conducted and gate procedures enhanced at the institutions.
Minister said additional staff will also be deployed in short order to reinforce the inmate to officer ratio in the facilities.
Another security’ measure that will be implemented is the removal of all electrical outlets on the cell blocks. This he noted will prevent the charging of phones which will inherently prevent the use of these devices.
The Minister further noted that the inmates are fed three nutritious meals daily, their living conditions are sanitary’ and is therefore dispelling the complaints and assertions made.
Minister Spencer said the well-being of all inmates and staff are of utmost importance, as they continue to do everything in their power to ensure that the basic rights of inmates are protected.
Last week inmates of the facility streamed live on Facebook, to voice their grouse surround Staff members of the facility who have been mistreating them because of an incident. They called for intervention from the authority to remedy the situation at the centre.
